Do Good People Go to Heaven?

Seventy per cent of Americans profess to be Christians.  If the question was asked of them, “Why do you think you’ll go to Heaven?”.  Many if not most would say something like, “I’m a good person” or “A good God wouldn’t send anyone to Hell”. These opinions are not based on text in the Bible.  The truth of the scripture tells us neither good people nor bad people go to Heaven. Can that be true? Here is the scripture reference.

NLT Romans Chapter 3:21 But now God has shown us a way to be made right with him without keeping the requirements of the law, as was promised in the writings of Moses[i] and the prophets long ago. 22 We are made right with God by placing our faith in Jesus Christ. And this is true for everyone who believes, no matter who we are.

23 For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard. 24 Yet God, in his grace, freely makes us right in his sight. He did this through Christ Jesus when he freed us from the penalty for our sins. 25 For God presented Jesus as the sacrifice for sin. People are made right with God when they believe that Jesus sacrificed his life, shedding his blood.

There are many scripture references such as John 3:16 and Ephesians 2:8 that substantiate the same truth that we are saved by the grace of God apart from doing good or bad.

It Can’t be that Easy!

Yes, it can, and IS! It’s believing (trusting in the finished work of Jesus Christ on the cross). In fact, these verses tell us that is the ONLY way. By believing, if you think about it, involves:

1.      Understanding Christ is the only one who can save you.

2.      Asking and confessing Jesus Christ to be your savior cements your commitment.

3.      Allow Jesus to transform your life (in His power).

What Do I Do?

One of the best ways is to confirm your decision by a prayer, something like this:

God, I realize that I am imperfect and committed wrongs. I ask you to forgive my transgressions and make Jesus my Lord and Savior. I will trust Him to guide my steps and lead my life the way He directs. In Jesus name, AMEN.
